About Us

Augusta de Fátima Charifo Maíta was born in Beira on 24 March 1980. She completed her primary and secondary studies in Maputo, finishing high school at Escola Secundária Josina Machel in 2000. She graduated in History from Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) in 2006, and earned a Master's in Rural Sociology from the same institution in 2011.

She has a long track record in Mozambican public administration: university lecturer at UEM (2006–2011); Deputy National Director of Studies at the Ministry of Economy and Finance (2011–2016); Chair of the Board of the National Sustainable Development Fund (2016–2017); Permanent Provincial Secretary of Sofala (2017–2018); and Director-General of the National Institute for Disaster Management (2018–2020).

As Deputy Director of Studies, she sat on the University Council of Universidade Pedagógica (2013–2015) and served as an alternate member of the Higher Statistical Council. She contributed to the National Development Strategy and to the draft Population Policy.

In 2019 the United Nations Secretary-General honoured her with the "Humanitarian Women" award in recognition of her work in the response to cyclones Idai and Kenneth.

She has also completed international training in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics at the London School of Economics, in Decentralised Regional Development Management at Humboldt University (Berlin), and in Employment Policy with the ILO in Turin.
